Mt Coot-tha Quarry Closure & Renewal
The Mt Coot-tha Quarry is the next big challenge facing MCPA. We hope you will support the initiatives as details are made public.
The next steps will be to collate all the information from 9th October forum; and then challenge BCC's planning process.
Opened in 1895 and owned by Brisbane City Council since 1925.
30 hectare site (twice the size of Roma St Parklands)
Designated as a Key Resource Area under the State Planning Act (KRA42)
Council intended to close the quarry in 1998 but it was extended to 2015, and then all the way out to 2032, each time with zero public consultation.
Provides material for use in BCC road projects (& possibly for sale to contractors)
Council has alternative nearby options for supply of quarried material including Bracalba quarry
Council has 2025 as possible closure timeframe; discloses no plans for rehabilitation; & apparently no funds set aside for quarry rehabilitation
Other quarry closures..
Rehabilitated (or 'repurposed') quarries have been documented many times. One of the most famous is the: butchartgardens.com/
